The fact that he does not stop running is known to probably everyone who is watching NorthEast United FC play in the third season of the Hero Indian Super League. Emiliano Alfaro, the Uruguayan who has shared the locker room with the likes of Suarez and Cavani is currently the top-scorer 6 games in. From what we have seen so far, it looks like the diminutive South American still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve.
Two goals against Goa gave an insight into the striker's psyche. The first one took the opposition goal-keeper by surprise. Bearing down with determination and a bit of smart dummy play, Alfaro forced the keeper to play the ball against him which then rebounded into the back of the net. The second goal was a work of art. After being played through by a sublime flick from Hali Charan, the former Lazio forward took a touch to steady himself and then slotted the ball between the keeper's legs from an acute angle. His third goal came against Pune, a game in which he put in a Herculean effort, covering every blade of grass on the pitch, pounding the opposition with relentless ferocity. He was duly rewarded as he pounced on a deflected Katsumi shot and poked it past Bete in goal. The fourth came in a pulsating encounter against Delhi Dynamos as he took his chances and slammed his own blocked attempt between the defender's legs to restore parity on the night.
Team-mate Nicolas Velez was all praises for Alfaro, "He gives us that something extra. When you see Emi working so hard and not giving up, it pushes you to also give your best. He is a very tough competitor and he has clearly shown his class thus far."
Emiliano joined the Highlanders this season after a year long lay-off due to injury, a spell which he admits was hard on him and his family. "I was sad not to play for a year. It was hard on my family too". However, with four goals and the love of the fans under his belt, we hope that the remaining eight games shall see him setting the Hero Indian Super League alight in more ways than one.
